Spines coming out of driftwood?!

Hi Everyone,

Over the past week I noticed some bluish, white spines coming out of my driftwood. It seems to be growing out of the end of the driftwood. I've attached a picture (apologies as it was hard to get a sharp, focused shot).

Any ideas what this could be? Is it harmful and should I try to remove it? The fish/snails haven't noticed or bothered with it.

Just took another look and it seems like whatever this is has been growing all over the wood. It looks like a black spiderweb (pretty freaky!) growing up from the base of the driftwood. Another pic attached.

Any advice would be appreciated!
