Sponge filter

I am wanting to get rid of the filter on my tank and was thinking about something. If I take the sponge out of my filter and wrap it around my airstone will it work as a sponge filter? Also I want shrimp but my water does not have enough calcium. I have been using an unknown gravelly substance my LFS gave me in the filter but I want something easier to use with a low flow setup like just described.

If you put a pipe with holes in it in the centre with the stone in it, it will make the filter more efficient. Like this

Helps even out water flow if you plug the bottom of the tube.

Thanks. Will any tubing work? I have some pvc pipe. I guess i could also use the filter intake from an aquaclear...

Any pipe will work. I've used a piece of unused canister filter intake before.
