Can anyone explain what's so great about sponge filters.

The bubbles bring water up through the sponge. The sponge is a home for beneficial bacteria. I use them in all my tanks as they don't suck up baby fish/shrimp. Yeah they don't take out solids but that's where water changes come in.

They are excellent in my opinion. I have them in 2 out of 3 tanks. Self contained, easy to maintain, do the job quietly and effectively. Cheaper too, by MILES, when compared to canisters and hob filters. Nothing wrong with a sponge filter.

I have one in my 20 gal shrimp tank and you can see some shrimp rest on it and pick left over food off it without fear of death
