What is the benefits of using a sponge filter over like a hang on filter.??

It depends greatly upon the size of the tank, and what application you want to use it for. Inherently I wouldn't call either one good or bad or better or worse.

Well would it benefit to have both.? Because I had one sitting around and was wondering if it would help?

Do you have either of these for the tank you plan on putting them on?
Sponge filters are simple to make if you already have an air pump, and if you dont have the hob, just buy an aquaclear (tell us the tank volume so we can tell you what to get).

But for the general answer to your question, running both is better.

+1
I run a hob filter and a sponge filter. The sponge filter has the majority of the beneficial bacteria which keeps the tank biologically filtered. The hob is great for capturing detritus / mechanical filtration. Each doing what they are best at.

It's in a 55 gal and I have had a hob on it and I just got this new sponge filter and I might as well use it along with the hob right.?
