I have a peaceful 56g nano and can either add:

9 furcata (forktail) rainbows
And
6 threadfin rainbows

Or all furcata

What would you do?????

I also love the Gertrude blue eye but they are supposedly very shy

IME they really aren't that shy (I guess it depends on what else you have in there, though). You can't really go wrong with gertrudae, furcatus, or threadfin as far as I'm concerned. They are all beautiful peaceful species that will mix well with a lot of other fish. Typically, your fish will be bolder and more interesting to watch in larger numbers. I'd pick one species and add a big group.
