Got a new heater from PetCo today, picked up some DHG while I saw at it (for the nano, even though I did plant some here) My heater was making fizzing noises, as if water was being dropped on something hot and then turned into steam. I didn't want to risk a real explosion so just bought a new one. Pics tomorrow!

So I've got some bad news.
Came home today, saw the pleco floating at the top of the tank
Took him out right away, he must have been dead for at least 3 hours. I saw him last night still, feeding happily. I did notice he had a very fat belly, but just thought he had eaten a lot. Well, when I took him out, his belly was huge. At this point I'm thinking bloat or parasites, but leaning towards bloat. I only fed a couple small algae wafer pieces, and the snails got to that before he even had a chance. I did throw in a couple slices of zucchini about a week ago, he ate that. Just wondering why he got it. I'm going back to PetCo, getting my money back. I don't know if it was something he had from the tanks at PetCo, if he was bloated or whatever. Just makes me sad. GBR is doing fine, so I have a feeling it's not the parameters. Just in case, here they are:
NitrATE: Just under 10 ppm
NitrITE: 0 ppm
Ammonia: 0 ppm
pH: Pretty high, 7.6 -7.8ish
I guess it happens. He had a pretty big bioload anyway, so I guess I won't have to worry about overstocking the tank biologically when I get the ram girl.
Anyway, that's all I have to report. I've decided to take apart the moss wall, just isn't working for me. I might put it in the 5.5, but I don't want it to ruin the view. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Definitely, the gases built up in the gut will cause it to float.

So I think we can all agree that it was bloat? Just for future reference, can someone tell me how to prevent bloat in the first place and if a fish is bloated how to make it better?

So I have a couple more questions regarding adding the female ram:
Should I expect some aggression at first from the GBR I have right now towards the female until they get used to each other? If so, how long should it last?
I just don't want to add her and get a lot of aggression.

I had aggression at first, it does take awhile Nils, just make sure you get a female from lfs, they are pretty easy to sex.....

Your ram looks OUTSTANDING!
Nice fish man!
He shod IMO welcome the girl and seem very happy more like pesty for a while?
When one wants to breed you will see any of the bad behavior then IMO.
Good luck this weekend on the girl!

Thanks! Hoping he gets the message to "breed" not "destroy".
My LFS tends to have some good stock, mostly bred in Florida. I'll update this thread when I get the girl, I have some time on Saturday.

Slight change of plans....
Couldn't find any rams locally, so I went ahead and ordered from CB. Excited to get the girl sometime next week. I do believe she will be shipped Monday. Can't wait!

If the shipping doesn't go flawlessly then we will all blame the USPS.
I got 5 girls going out Monday!
I find it actually funny that even among my own stock I believe there is a deficiancy of females?
Many fish actually can be sexed out according to water parameters.
Or more correctly water parameters can have a serious influence on the sex of fry.
I wonder if there is something to be further researched on this....
I am honored to be chosen to supply a female by the way!
