stocking by region

I want to try a heavily planted tank stocked as naturally as possilby. Can anyone point me to some good resources - I'm thinking Amazon Basin with discus as basis for the tank.

One great place to start is right here at AA! Welcome.

The basic equipment needs can be found in the stickies at the beginning of the forum. At that point, it's just a matter of stocking the tank with the "amazon" theme. I would suggest rock work (which includes caves), driftwood and of course, the plants. FWIW, there isn't a wealth of true "submerged" amazon plants, so many have substituted as a result.
