It's good to have a few but there really isn't a rule you have to have 8. You could do 5 without issue.

Well I googled pygmy corys and I hit a link and it said they like to be in large groups, like 8 of them. And thank you. It had a bunch of fake plants before I got my driftwood and real plant. That was when I had my male betta, but he is no longer with me. But now I have my female and she is amazing.
