40ppm nitrates isnt the end of the world! Its just on the higher side of ideal. Def look into some more plants, especially some fast growing ones. They will help use the nitrates. You will need to stay on top of checking your nitrate levels as well because they will jump quickly without regular water changes (atleast 2x wk to keep levels in check). You will have to do a bit more work than someone with zero nitrates but your fish should be fine! Congrats again on being cycled!!!!! :)

I'm gonna look in to doing the plant thing after what I read here for sure for my 72 gal building I'm working on. Hard to keep my trates down even with weekly water changes!
