Tank prices.

Iw ent to a petsmart recently to check out the prices for some tanks. I noticed they had a 10 gallon all glass aqaurium for $7 with no hood. I also saw a 20 gallon long all glass aquarium for $27 with no hood. Why is the price so high on the 20 gallong long if they're both from the same manufacturer? I was expecting a price like $19.

You could ask them....

But....bigger tanks use more thick glass, and the glass is then more expensive per square foot used....and 20 longs are a less standard size, and uncommon sizes/shapes also tend to run a bit more on the retail end.

Kind of off topic, but along the same lines at PetsMart. I went in to buy an AquaClear 200. I did my research on-line and they had them on-line for $14.99. When I went in to the store, expecting to pay $14.99, I noticed that they were actually $29.99!!!! 8O I asked the fish attendant why so high and he pretty much said who knows. Needless to say, I left without purchase. I went home, got on the PetsMart website, printed the listing showing $14.99, and went back. I showed the manager (who wasn't going to give it to me for $14.99), threatened to take it to the regional office, and was given the AC 200 at only $11.99 (for the trouble, he says). I would imagine that the cost of the 20L may be inflated a bit (though the points made above are quite valid). Check and see how much it is on-line, and if you have to, take in a copy of the listing and argue your way through it..... if it's that big of a deal to you.

I don't do petsmart for much of anything for my aquariums anymore, other than chemicals. Come to think of it, I'm not to happy with the training my dog received either. . .

Of course...the physical store needs to factor in the tens of thousands of dollars in overhead (rent, power, employee wages, cleaning, fixture costs, etc) that it incurs each month....online sources, even from the same company, do not. When you purchase from a shop you pay the extra for the ability to actually inspect the product before buying, the customer service from live staff, and the ability to take the product home immediately. I have not searched the PetsMart site to see if it is posted there, but most companies will statr on their sites that their online prices are just that, only online prices...and that the prices in shop locations are different.

Forgot about all that fun stuff Toirtis.

I did, however, check that out and at the time, it said nothing about "the store price may be different". I haven't checked (or been to PetsMart) in quite a while so I'm not sure if that's posted on there or not now.

I haven't bought anything but livestock and plants from a lfs since I paid $100 for a Filstar xp1 canister filter. It was marked $120 and the owner took $20 off the price--I felt so special! I found it online for $65.

When it's time to get a bigger tank I'll look for one used and local.
