My tank has always sat around seventy six degrees, because that's how warm my house is and my fish have all been fine. However, since it's starting to get cold out its been effecting my tank. I woke up this morning an my tank was at 68. Do you recommend I get a heater? If yes, what kind?

Depends what fish you have for the temp and size of the tank for the heater

My tank is a forty gallon. And has mollies, guppies, one platy, cories, and a mystery snail.

I would add a 150 watt heater an keep the tank steady in the mid 70s

I can tell you don't get a Fluval E Series. They are good heaters but they are exceedingly picky about having to be in a perfect water flow area or they constantly flash LF (low flow) at you. A temp of 76-78 is generally a good all around community fish temp.
