So I come home to my 30g and I find 2 of my cardinal tetras floating with discoloration in their blue stripes and pieces of fin missing. Another one is moving but in pretty bad shape.
The culprit - I've been crumbling fish flakes when I feed my fish, this way I don't over feed and the tetras have a chance to get to it. But this has resulted in them feeding on the surface and getting coated in flake crumbs. I just saw several times the female swordtail actively pursing and attacking them. Fish in tank are 2 swordtail, 2 platy, 5 (now 2 tetras), 1 cory, 4 japonicas.
I have removed the tetras and rinsed off the survivors with tank water. Lesson learned =[ I will not be crumbling the flakes as much from now on.
Any other advice for a newbie?
