I have been reading up on tetras in general, and some websites say that the 'natural' habitat (what I'm trying to re-create) is sparsley planted. Others say that they do better in a well planted set up. Any experience that may help?

I've had tetras since my first tank. I've had them in no plants, fake plants, a combo of live and fake. They do well in all.

My neon tetras have proven very adaptable, also. They've been in everything and seem content with their school regardless of their environment.

It depends on the species of tertra and how well you feed them. IME black skirts will eat live plants if you don't feed them at least twice a day

My neons and glowlights, about 10 in total love to hide in and around my larger piece of dw with plants growing behind. Seem to be the place they chill more or less anymore.
