Think again, it's very possible to keep bettas in community tanks as long as the tank isn't over crowded and the number of fish are kept at a minimum. The minimum tank size I would try is a thirty gallon. Tank mates should be able to hold there own against the betta so I wouldn't put it with guppies as they can be kind of like bad traffic a good tank mate that I have paired up with a betta are angel fish and larger tetras paradise fish could also be a good match as they are very closely related but this could also mean they will clash. There are many options to tank mates for a betta given he has his own space in a tank.
