The weird goey stuff

Here's this goey stuff on a part of my driftwood and it looks like its a film of slime but in like congealed balls. It's around the roots of a plant too. Anyone have an idea of what it could be? Bad?

New Driftwood will get a white slime, it should go away. You can wipe some off, but it may come back. Just wipe off the worst and don't worry too
much.
