i've just been reading a post in the unhealthy fish forum and toxic gases where mentioned. i was wondering what are they and what can cause them. is this YET ANOTHER thing that i have to worry about?
damn fish. i knew i should have stuck with brain surgery.

Well toxic gases could be your regular high amonia, nitrite, nitrate, or someone may have been reffering to toxic gases that can build up under a sand substrate if not aerated.

What was the thread you were reading so we can explain that thread more specifically?

Normally it is gas buildup in the substrate. Stir your substrate regularly through gravel vacs or MTS and you'll be fine.

Agreed. Its from dead (anaerobic) spots in your sand (gravel doesn't usually have this problem) that form hydrogen sulfide gas. Not really all that common but does happen.
