I have sand in my tank with no water yet. I have a Whisper 40 filter in my tank (20 gallon). Should I go with an undergravel filter or will my sand get stuck in there?

Nowadays, I think most of the people here at AA wouldn't recommend an undergravel for ANYONE, much less with sand. I'm not 100% sure, but I think you need gravel for a UGF. They are a pain and are usually only marginally effective at best. Stick with the whisper.

Yes, no sand for a UGF. You need gravel as it becomes part of the filter. There needs to be flow through the gravel to work. The sand will just fill it up. The whisper might be okay depending on whether you want a planted tank and just how stocked of a tank you want. Heavily stocked and you will need more filtration. Planted tank (no go with a UGF by the way) and you will probably be fine with the filtration you have.

I just have to say that Whisper filters are horrible filters.

And that is all Im going to say about that.

[Mine NEVER worked, so I got a penguin biowheel and it is AMAZING]
