wal-mart usually has lots of tetras/cories, both tetras and cories like to be kept in groups (5+ for smaller tetras 3+ for cories).

fish not to get, and will outgrow the 30:
silver dollars
oscars
knifefish
peacock/tiretrack eels (kuhli loaches are ok)
clown loaches
african cichlids (south american are good, but find out how big they get, some stay large, some stay tiny)

Be picky about your fish. Your local WalMart may be different, but mine does not have the best care for the fish. They may not like you, but don't settle for fish that aren't going to make it. Good luck purchasing!

Of that list, hc, I have only ever seen Oscar's at my Wal-Mart.

Malnourished and neglected is an understatement.

I wouldn't touch wal-mart fish with a stick. Unless it was a stick that reached over to South America and Africa, with a net on the end of it.

I just bought some mollies and platys from Walmart. They are doing fine. The Walmart I go to is far better than the local Petland. Walmart seems to really know about the fish and they have healthier fish than my LFS. But that is in my area I know all areas are different.

Tetras, swordtails, mollies, platys, cory cat, giant danios are all in my community tank and doing well.

If you have other things in the tank, the Rainbowfish might not have enough room in the tank to swim. They're quite active.

I went in to a wal*mart they had the heart dyed fish, and a big pleco with some sort of white fungus growth coming from its eye area. I tried to take a photo with my phone, but i was asked not to take photos and leave by a manager that happened to be in the area.

I know that most people dont like waly world fish, and I can agree that they suck at takin care of the fish in their tanks. BUT. I have bought 6 fish from Wal mart. 4 otos, 1 red fin shark, and 1 pacu. I bought eh ottos over a year ago, 3 are alive and doin fine, the one that died jumped out of a net while was moving tanks. The red fin and Pacu I bought about 9 months ago, the red fin is near full grown, and extremely healthy, the Pacu was released in a private pond 7 months ago, after he went from 1 inch to 7 inches in about 2 months. Right now he is well over a foot in length.

So while the tanks at the local wally world look horrible, the fish I have gotten from them do hold a better track record of those from any of hte LFSs I use.

I would still go to the LFS first though.

OMG, I wouldn't buy fish at my WM if somebody paid me LOTS of money, but each WM is different and if y'all have a good experience at yours, then, by all means.

The tanks @ my WM are death machines with common plecs munching on dead fish carcasses. 8O I can't even hardly bring myself to buy fish food there......yes, it's that bad.

BTW, I have a 30gallon.

You couldn't GIVE me fish from Walmart.

Go to a local pet shop instead. Pay a little more (maybe) and get healthier, better taken care of fish.

Ill be going tomorrow to see whats left. They have them on clearence cause they arent selling fish eanymore because no one really gave them care. So I agree with you and Im glad this is happening. I always go there and see the dead and dying and it sickend me. Only reason Ill be getting fish(choosing the stronge & healthy) is cause they are cheap and Im just starting my tank, wich means Ill be able to have fish and still buy stuff for the tank.

I feel bad for the fish at Wally Mart. I got escorted out of the store today for trying yet again to take photos of their sick fish. If they just took care of their animals there wouldn't be people trying to take photos of their inhumane tanks.

Honestly, the biggest problem I have with wal mart fish, is things like the pacus and irridescant sharks. Their name tags say they only get to 10 inches, and I have been in there countless times when someone asks the guy runnin the place how big, they say 10 inches, or even say a foot and a half, and the customer asks if it will fit in likea 10 or 29 gallon or soemthing, and they are told 'Sure! they only get as big as the tank!'....

Ive done my shopping. And it didnt cost me much.
I have cory cats, tetras, and platies (Think theyre platies, but theyre live beareres, how ever you say it).
All is good, no fighting/nipping and all is good.
Ill have a more direct list later. Im tired right now and love watching them explore.
And I want to say thanks to all, you really helped. Ill have pics by the end of the month, by then I can really say these are my fish, and not take pics now and later they die.
BIG THANKS----------------
