Re: snail shells left behind after assassin snail eats them. Is there any negative effect of the snail shells remaining in aquarium? My assassins have taken out a lot of snails and my black substrate is littered with white shells. Will they calcify the water or anything like that?

Regular water changes should prevent any buildup. I would think that a LOT of shells would be needed to alter the water chemistry. The assassin snails would be utilizing the calcium as well.
IMO it's more of an eye sore (white shell fragments on a black substrate). You could try siphoning them out.
