Morning everyone,

Quick question for you?
I have a fluval chi 19L with 1 X Betta and 2 Ottos added 1 week ago, just done weekly water test and found
Ph 7.6, Am 0ppm, No2 0ppm and No3 40ppm (thats high i know)

Have completed at 40% water change. Whats caused the spike in the No3? adding the 2 otto's? or something else. Will a 40% water change be enough or should i do more?

Thanks in advance for your help

Sorry just read that and it is a little confusing, Tank has been up and running for over a year with the Betta in, Added the 2 ottos last week. All other info correct, Apologies.

It's probably just the extra bioload from the ottos.

More bioload means more Nitrate due to the bacteria processing more.

You may have to step up your PWC.

I would perform another 50% PWC to bring levels down again. Then keep Nitrate under 20ppm by testing and doing 50% PWC when needed.

5 gallons is too small for 2 otos. They require almost entirely natural algae as their diet. 5 gallons doesn't offer enough surface space to ensure their survival.
