A TDS meter will tell you the level of total dissolved solids in your water like chlorine, copper, iron, ect. You really shouldn't need one or worry about the tds levels in freshwater

You'll want one if you're starting a saltwater tank because there should be 0 TDS in the water you use for water changes.

Im bout to get a RO system installed and was told a TDS meter would not be a bad thing to have.

The TDS meter will tell you how well your RO system is working. The TDS of the RO water should be significantly less (not exactly 0 unless you're using DI as well) than your regular tap water.

Yes..I will be using a DI with it....should I go ahead and invest in one?

If this is for a freshwater tank then tap water works fine and you shouldn't have to use RO/DI water at all. Unless you have well water or something like that, I wouldn't invest in one.
