Weird brown film?

Hello

I noticed there is this weird brown filmy stuff always in the water around my Java Fern and Java Moss. It makes the water look brown and dirty, and when I remove it out of the water, its a sort of film. What is this?

Sounds like a low form of algae.

Brown film is usually diatoms... What's the light ? Tank size ? Nitrates readings, and PO4 readings ?

If it's a new tank (less than 4 months old) it's normal you see a lot of diatoms, as they feed on sillicates in the water column, and new tanks often have excess of sillicates.

The tank is over a year old. I just PWCed last Wednesday.

So it's not growing on the surface of anything, it's a cloud in the water?
