West African biotope stocking

I'm trying to help my friend setup his first biotope tank.The problem is we don't really know what fish come from west Africa except the kribensis, nanochromis transvestitus, and buffalo cichlid. He said he didn't want krib because of how common they are in Our area. He wants community fish that are pretty hardy and school like a tetra of some sort also is their any small west african bottom dwelling catfish because those would be nice to.

congo tetras would fit the bill for a west africnan schooling fish but hey get larger for a tetra. How big will the tank be?

Congo tetras might be a little large for that then. African banded barbs might be better as they stay small but it could be hard to find them.

We've never heard or seen those at the LFS

those do look pretty cool though

They have great personality and become quite interactive. They need to be kept in groups of 3 or more and eventually grow large.

Rope fish are also great escape artists in my experience!!!
