That looks a whole lot easier to clean than a sand filter, but I don't think your water would be nearly as clear. Sand will filter out even the smallest of particles, and I don't think polypropylene beads are small enough to provide that fine of a filter.

Agreed...personally, I would go with a sand filter.
 
what did you want to buid a sand filter for? a pond? The bead filter needs backwashed daly just like a sand filter so Im inclined to second Toirtis's oppinion and would want the finer mechanical filtration that a sand filter would afford..
