Did you have a large snail in the tank? It might be a snail that has been sucked out of its shell.

I had a gold mystery snail get stuck in the filter tube (hang on back filter) and it died before I saw it--when that happens it gets sucked right out of the shell. It happens--and mine was just an Aquean Quietflow 30.
