I remove 50 to 60 percent of the tank water and replace it with pure, treated tap water. Smaller water changes leave too much dissolved waste in the tank.
For livebearing fish, the greater the ratio of females to males the better. 5 females to one male is good, 10 to 1 is better. If you get your female livebearers from the pet store, you don't need to buy males. The females are generally kept with the males, so they're already pregnant. You'll have all the males you need in a few weeks.
