When to change filter?

I am using a Whisper 20 HOB filter for my tank and am wondering when exactly to change it. I have heard some people say "after 6 weeks", but others tell me to change it when the water starts to overflow the filter, so to speak.

Any advice or help would be welcome.

When the flow is reduced due to too much gunk on the filter, then rinse it out thoroughly in some spent tank water, and replace it. This way you save $$ on filters and keep your precious bacteria as well. I like to do this on HOB filters about every 2 weeks. When the floss covering is hopelessly shredded then you can put in a new one.
