I have been reading lots about how people have driftwood in their tanks. Can I use fresh wood from my trees? How would I go about treating it? What is unsafe to use?

Fresh wood really isn't a good idea to use in aquariums: it'll contain resins, oils, bugs, etc. that can contaminate the tank and possibly even harm the fish. Also, it'll probably float- which would make it difficult to use in the tank.
