I am a member of the International Betta Congress and I have been successfully breeding bettas since the beginning of 2012. Even though I do not follow show standards, my fish are significantly more symmetric and better developed than the ones you would normally found at your local fish place:
The bloodline came from Thailand, and is composed of generations and generations of selective breeding. Not the end of result of "whatever x mightwork" seen on most veil tails;
The diet of the fish is prestine: never overfed, so no swimbladder under developed (no tail-heavy fish) and no bovine heart. My fish grow slow, but live longer (according to the literature, might reach 8 years if kept in warm waters);
The water they are born and raised is 82F. There is no metabolic disfunction due to hypothermia.
I focus on halfmoons and halfsuns, but the halfsuns F2 generate some crowntails too.
With that said, I recently moved to Boston and no longer have the network of
LFS and regular buyers that I used too. For me to continue enjoying the hobby of breeding bettas, I need a new target audience. Based on that, I am willing to start shipping next spring.
If I get 10 people or so that would consider buying some bettas around April (100% up to you, no obligations), I will consider breeding this holidays.
Here are some of my fish:
