I'm beginning a 55 gallon planted tank that will soon house our guppies in the 10 gallon. I'm also planning on introducing some inverts after the tank is well cycled. The biggest concern is that I want a thunderbolt crayfish that maxes out at 4-5" but my girlfriend is concerned that it will prey on her guppies. My though it they swim so high in the water column that in a 55 the two species would be able to live in harmony. Thoughts on this?

Crayfish are dangerous to long finned fish. Fast fish like danios are okay but if he gets ahold of a fish it won't be pretty.

I think that they would be okay exactly because of the reason you mentioned but if the guppies are that important to her, I'd advise against it still.

My guppies swim all over the tank. I personally just wouldn't risk it. Wouldn't want to wake up to a guppy snapped in half from claws
