Found a worm in my shrimp tank

It's not a plant root for sure. :)

They often arrive on plants bought from a fish store, etc. Could come in on previously used substrate.

When you get them often you can stir the substrate and some will start free swimming up, and the fish will eat them (harmless to them). If you see a lot of them spontaneously swimming up free (as opposed to just the sporadic one or two) it may mean you have too much poop/feed in the substrate. If you just see them periodically when you disturb it, think of them just like earthworms in a garden, almost literally.
