Hello, I am trying to grow algae on rocks in glass containers placed in a window for my nerite snails to eat. I have grown something but I am not sure what kind of algae it is and if it is safe for me to put in the tank. If anyone can identity it I would appreciate it. To me it looks like brown tiny clumps of dust/dirt. Thanks! ~J

Diatoms maybe? I have a feeling that if they were diatoms then they would be growing on the sides of the container as well. Why not just use algae wafers?

Yes whatever it is, it is growing on the sides and bottom of the containers too. My snails won't eat algae wafers or blanched spinach :( Hopefully its because they are getting enough food from the tank. I just wanted to give them another option with the rocks. Thanks! ~J
