Some people do. I never did when they were in an aquarium indoors. Mine are now in a pond, and I didn't feed every day during the summer because the ecosystem supported by a pond produces food for them.

A fast for my guys is skipping a meal. On the rare occasions we are away, they are not fed. Outside, they are usually fed once a day but they have lots of other things to eat naturally.
