I know this is very very frowned upon but I have a 1.5 gallon tank with three gold fish and it didn't have a filter. Now I know the tank is to small to begin with and as they grow it will only get worse. But for right now they have been doing fine for a couple months. I have been cleaning the tank very often. I decided last night to go out and purchase a hang on filter for a tank up to ten gallons and put it in. The water already looks better. Is this okay for now?

No, it isn't. 1.5 gallons isn't enough for any fish, let alone something with the size and waste potential of a single goldfish, let alone three.

They have been doing just fine for about 3 months without a filter.

Yeah, it's a testament to the amazing hardiness of fish and how they've survived for millions of years. But it's also going to kill them eventually. Have they grown in 3 months? If they haven't grown then they're stunted which is incredibly unhealthy; if they have grown they're producing more waste and running out of room- and eventually they'll be stunted. See the dilemma? It's flat-out cruel.

+1

If it hasn't affected them already it will soon.

Woah woah woah. Okay I will go talk to the aquatic specialist at petco to see if they can take them back. We are on pretty good terms so it won't be a problem. Sorry I didn't mean to be cruel here.

We live and we learn.

I started with a goldfish in a 2.5g.... No hard feelings just learn from the experience.
