Bioactive substrate

I know this is an aquatic animal section on an aquarium forum but anyone on here know anything about planted vivariums?

I have an exoterra with a whites tree frog and he is awesome! Tons of personality and starts croaking when he sees the cricket container coming.

It's time I get him off of just paper towels cork bark and a bowl and make it a more natural setup.

I know about needing a drainage layer as to not drown the plants or cause rotting.

My questions are more about the substrate they are in.
I would like to have a colony of springtails to help with any mold and waste because of high humidity and would like to have leaf litter over that and plants.

What is a good safe substrate mid for the planted Viv? I've had people say yes to a little sand others say no. There are just a lot of discrepancies when it comes to it and would like an opinion. Again the inhabitant is a whites tree frog.

I love my fish!!!
