Snails and turtles?

Hey all!

I have a red ear slider. I want to get another one, but don't think my tank is big enough (already think I am going to have to get a new tank within the next year or two), so instead I was think of getting a snail or two. Would snails and my turtle live well together? Or would it be harmful to the RES.

Snails will be food unless they are huge mystery/apple snails.
