40 gallon tall questions

So some of you guys may know that I was planning my 90 g to go reef. I was very excited until my wife hits me with "and baby makes five". Needless to say the 90 project is over and I'm considering selling the setup if anyone in the new Orleans area is interested. So my new smaller project is a 40 g tall (30Wx12Dx24H) I have in the garage. My questions begin with: do I need the same equipment as I would for the 90? What is a good led light kit I can use for a 30"L tank? Would I need to drill this tank or would an hob be sufficient? I know stocking is limited but I'm not worried as I will upgrade... eventually.

Best and cheapest LEDs you're going to find. Almost every reefer in this forum uses them now I think. I run a CPR overflow w/ an aqualifter HOB overflow. It works great without any issues. Those are the 3 things I would suggest for your downgraded project. Congrats BTW.

I would probably need two of those, but two will not fit. We are very excited about another little one in the house.

Considering a 250 watt metal halide fixture? Any thoughts or suggestions? I'd like the Tao tronic fixture but two won't fit.

I read about these LEDs and would I need two? Some sites say they replace 400 watt halides. If this is the case I should only need one, right? Also what is a good comparison of wattage output?

Also would I need a protein skimmer and a uv steralizer? Some places say yes and others that just good husbandry will suffice.

You should only need one to cover a 40. Yes, a skimmer is a necessity for reefs. A UV sterilizer isn't needed.
