40 long tank with a 20 long sump I made. Have live rock and live sand, good clean up crew. Treating the water with a calcium buffer system now. About how long should I wait to test the water and start some soft coral...?

I test my water about every week. Just to be on the safe side. I would wait to add coral intel there Is hardly any swings/shifts in your tank. I would wait just in case you have an out break of hair alg, etc. Turning off the lights would kill what ever is with in the tank. But if you don't mind cleaning it up, then go for some soft corals to start. I would not put sps corals into a new tank. But that's what i would say. Good luck!

Ok awesome, what type of test kits to you use or would recommend...?

I had realy good luck with the sechem test kits. Alot of money, but the most accurate test kits I have used.
