My 55gal tank finished cycling about a week ago and I added a clownfish and a damsel. There is only flourescent lighting on it for now though I am in the market for some power compacts. I have noticed a brown precipitate collecting on the rocks and sand. At first I thought it was algae but I was relocating a powerhead and it blew on the rock and the stuff wash off. Any idea what it is?

Sounds like diatom algae a natural part of a new tank. Should pass in a few weeks. Regular flourescent light are fine for a FO system and have no barring on the diatom, I got it with my VHO lights on my reef and my NO bulbs on my FOWLR.

well its not going to stay fish only that why I want the lights. Thanks for the quick answer
