Can a sump be plastic?

Does a sump tank have to be glass or acrylic?

Nope. I have read where people have made a sump out of a rubbermaid type square plastic whatchamadooly tote.

A sump can be any container that'll hold water and not leach anything into the water.

Not all plastics are aquarium safe for reef. There should be a print on the bottom somewhere stating the kind of plastic and you can check online. I'm not familiar with the different kinds but I know some members here are so maybe they will come help you out.
