Cover for aquarium?

Is it a good idea to have a cover for your aquarium? Because I use to have a 30 gal saltwater tank and I never had a cover and my lighting fixture was always covered in salt.

I have a cover on my tanks that fish jump out of the ones that don't have jumpers are open. I clean the salt off at least once a week. Covering a tank effects the O2 levels and the ph.

I use egg crate to cover my tank. You can also do a diy one using screen for a door. Again covers are not needed but help for fish that like to jump.
