Cycling question????

I'm about to set up my first saltwater tank. I only have the tank now and I'm researching as much as possible. Can I just put a shrimp in a mesh bag and leave it there for a month without testing? Then test it and see if it's done cycling? If it's not I can wait and re test.

Sounds like a good plan.
The testing will just tell you where it is at.
You don't need to anything but add shrimp and wait for it cycle.
The month is good ballpark.

I wouldn't even add a shrimp to decompose. Are you not using live rock?

Throw the shrimp into a lil net, and lay the net into the water. The net will keep the decomposing shrimp confined to that net, and not all over the tank.

Tied off in panty hose works out really well too.

Thanks for your advice. I am just going to use an old mesh bag I have and put it in with the shrimp once my tank is setup.
