cycling w/base rock

Going to be cycling 100gal reef. plan on starting with 80lbs LR. If I use 40lbs. lifeless base rock, wouldn't this rock be more prone to algae growth? I don't want to waste $120 for LR, when I can get 40lbs for $60
fore base rock. However I do want to do whatever is best for the tank as a whole.
 
exactly what I figured. Is it worth saving the few bucks and dealing with that dreaded algae........... :2gunfire:
 
The trick is to put the base rock on the bottom and top it off with the LR. That way, not as much light gets to it and pest algae growth isn't that much of a problem. I did the 180 this way and it worked out well. JMHO.
