As far as maintenance... well there is none. All you need are good fauna. Pods, bristle worms, and some nassarius snails will get the job done. All of which also burrow in the sand keeping it well oxygenated. Stay way from sand sifting gobies and stars they eat all the good DSB fauna.

I believe variety is good in sand beds. Try to trade sand with as many people as you can. Get a large variety of critters growing in there. An active sand bed keeps things cleaned up nicely.
