Depth of intake on canister

Hello,

I have a 25g tank and I found a really good deal on a rena 2 canister filter. I was wondering should the intake be toward the middle or the bottom of the tank.

if you could get a surface skimmer for it then that is the best place for it. most of the organics in the water at floating on the surface liek an oil slick

If i put an old tank in my stand as a sump do I put the out put from canister filter in the sump and then add a pump to put the water back in main tank? If so how do I control the water flow so it stays level in the sump?

with valves if you're using a hang on syphon style overflow, if its a drilled gravity overflow then the more the pump pumps the more it will overflow
