Just got my first diatom bloom.. Brown stuff..

What does that mean tank wise?
Any thing I can do?
Is it a good think?

It happens with new tanks. Just need to let it run its course. They'll eventually consume the silicates in your tank and die off as fast as they showed up.

Exactly what Rick said. Some small inverts will eat them, such as ble legged hermit crabs, but not in great enough quantities to make a difference in how fast they go away on their own.

My tank is 8 weeks old and I got my bloom about 4 weeks ago. I kept up with my water changes and bought a goby to sift the sand. I did clean the glass often but left the rocks alone. It cleared up after a couple of weeks and now is completely gone. However in its place I now have cynobacteria which looks the same but is red not brown. Will there ever be a time I can look at this tank without having something that needs attention lol.

Hope not as that would be dull for a hobby :)

You just need crabs to walk through it or something to move around in it.
Not a big deal
