Of course you can! Just don't use "playsand" as it will compact too hard, and if it gets kicked up, it takes forever to settle.
I use and recommend Silica (sandblasting sand, pool filter sand, decor sand [Home Depot]), All- purpose sand [Home Depot].
Other "sands" like Aragonite and Crushed Coral sands can make the water harder, and the pH higher, so unless your fish require that, I would avoid it.
i thought you shouldnt use silica based sand
and avoid aragonite
