Hey guys,

I've got my 55 gal setup with a protein skimmer, two powerheads, about 100lbs of live rock and about 3 inch live sand on bottom. My friend sold me this setup and in addition to this stuff he was running a fluval 404 canister filter with the output running through a corallife uv sterilizer. I have read on here that you can get by without canister filters and sterilizers. Do you guys think I should use them anyways, seeing as I have them already? Or should I clean them up and store them for a bigger tank later on? Thanks!

All you need is LR and a skimmer. And some PH`s to push the water around. I had a 55 for 7 yrs and all I had was 2 lbs of LR per gallon and a skimmer. I used a UV for several yrs. I liked using it for getting rid of algea spores and parasites. I dont run one now though.
