Fluval 404

Should i leave the sponges in, or take them out of my 404? I am always cleaning them off weekly (in used tank water) but i dont think they are doing much. I was about to ditch them, what do ya think?

If they're not doing much, why are you cleaning them so often?

The only thing I use my fluval for is water circulation and occasionally to hold some carbon in. Otherwise it is totally empty.

Mine is filled with live rock, but I left the sponges in for mechanical filtration.

The live rock rubble is in my sump as I needed something to replace the bio balls with that is why I leave the fluval empty.
