Algae is a sign of nutrients in the water column. It can easily overrun the tank and is unsightly.
How much are you feeding, how often and large are your water changes, what are you feeding, what fish are in the tank?
There are two articles in my signature that will discuss algae battles.

I dont touch my back glass. I have three tangs that pick on it constantly. I know you cant have three tangs in a 55 gallon but you could have a Kole tang or any of the bristle tooth variety. The Yellow eyed Kole will help to get rid of that.
